Tybee Island, Ga

We headed out this morning at about 7:45 for Georgia.  It is about 150 miles but not fast miles, speed limits are between 45-60 with some in town roads with lights so it takes about 3.5 hours to get to Tybee Island.

First we had to stop at Waffle House as Eric has never eaten at one.  it was ok.  good waffle, sausage and great hashbrowns with onions and tomatos.  hmmm.. actually the whole breakfast was pretty good..

We arrived at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge (which is in South Carolina) at about 11:30. The four mile drive is closed until June but what we seen it is a beautiful place.  there is a brand new visitor center with great displays.  from here we went to Tybee Island for lunch..  The Crab Shack.  I had crab cakes, they were OK.  (I think I need to stay away from crab cakes (at least outside of Maryland), they never live up to my expectations), great cole slaw, Eric had a wonderful shrimp salad sandwich and crab stew that was pretty good.

this place has a gator pond with about 70 alligators..  since it was so cool they were pretty slow.

kept heading down to Tybee Island to the Light Station and Museum.

178 steps to the top...

we have a great view of the Fort Screven's Batterry Garland, that was constructed between 1898 and 1899.  It houses the Museum.
I need to get a flag...

who doesn't remember Casimir Pulaski???
on to Fort Pulaski...  ( this is one of the places we could have volunteered this year but didn't)..

moated..
actually double moated...

missing bricks where the fort was hit during the civil war.

We checked into the Hilton Garden Inn in the Historic District of Savannah.  Dinner was on the river front, po'boys, shrimp and oysters.
