we first took the entire 1.5 hour tour then got off at the visitor center before boarding again so we can jump off and on the trolley at stops we wanted to see a bit more of.
monument to the confederate soldiers that died in the war.
fountain in Forsyth Park..
wedding in front of the fountain.. (very cold at this point in time)
they just really like Casimier Pulaski in this city..
Dolphin spout...
this is Chippewa Square, when we first came by here there wasn't a park bench. this is the park where Forest Gump tells his life story.someone placed a bench here and was taking pictures of people sitting there. not sure if they were charging or what exactly was going on.
the cemetary...
some of Shermans troops camped at this cemetery, they knocked down the headstones to erect their tents etc.. the average age of the Union soldiers was 16. so you know how 16 year old boys have to have something to do.. they modified the dates and info on the headstones to bring humor to the war. the headstones that were not totally ruined are hanging on the back wall.
this one now reads that Josiah was 11 years old, his wife was 17 and son was 12...
lots of beautiful iron work..
Except for the wooden door and the brick the rest of this house is all iron. everything painted white or brown.
lots of fountains...
Like Charleston there is a lot of churches in Savannah..
The Cathedral of St John the Baptist
Lunch was a fried green tomato, smoked apple wood bacon salad (very good) and a bowl of crab soup with wonderfully sweet corn bread muffins and the most delicious biscuits!
they have some very large steps down to River Road
old buildings...
and City Hall..
the clock says 4:05... time to go back to the hotel for a rest. we were pretty full from lunch so just went to a local bar for a beer and sliders. great day in Savannah!
