Fort Sumter was ocuppied by the Union Army on April 12, 1861, and is known for being the place where the opening shots of the Civil War were fired. It is built on a man made island in the Charleston Harbor between Fort Moultre and Fort Johnson. We had to take a ferry out to the fort.

modeling my new winter coat!!
I did need it for the boat ride over...
of course we stopped for lunch before we headed to the Fort. we went to a New York style deli. Eric had the Ruben, wonderful, filled with corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese and russian dressing grilled on rye... I had the 1/2 Pastrami on rye with a cup of chicken dumpling soup. both were wonderful.. great sandwiches, but the menu is too extensive so it was hard to decide what to get..
